SmartDFE v6.0 (Beta): The platform for the next generation of digital front ends

SmartDFE™ has always been about helping OEMs get to market faster while building what makes them different. Rather than delivering a fixed, one-size-fits-all digital front end, SmartDFE provides an award-winning collection of market-proven components that enable engineering teams to build differentiated press solutions while reducing development time and risk.

SmartDFE v6.0 (Beta) is a major milestone in that journey. Alongside significant enhancements to color management, automation and operator workflows, it begins an important architectural evolution that will shape the future of digital print through the introduction of GPU-native technologies across the SmartDFE platform.

For decades, digital front ends (DFEs) have relied almost entirely on CPUs. As print speeds, resolutions and workflow complexity continue to increase, so do the computational demands placed on the DFE. SmartDFE v6.0 begins addressing these challenges by embracing modern compute architectures while maintaining the quality, compatibility and reliability that customers expect.

One of the most visible improvements is the new Apex™-powered Job Editor. Rewritten using Avalonia, it delivers a fully cross-platform experience with GPU-native rendering for previews and thumbnails, enabling operators to work smoothly with even the most complex PDF files. Combined with Smart Media Definition support, the new interface provides a faster, more responsive editing experience while accurately representing the final printed output.

At the heart of production, Harlequin Direct is now available with either a CPU-native or GPU-native RIP core, enabling OEMs to choose the architecture that best matches the performance and cost objectives of their press. The GPU-native RIP executes the rendering pipeline directly on the GPU rather than simply offloading selected operations, while preserving the proven Harlequin Direct rendering technology, APIs and workflow compatibility that customers rely on.

The GPU-native RIP core was engineered using the same Harlequin DNA as its CPU counterpart. Rather than starting again, it builds on decades of expertise in rendering algorithms, color management and print quality, bringing the trusted Harlequin Direct architecture to a GPU-native implementation. Initially deployed through SmartRIP and now integrated into SmartDFE, OEMs can evaluate both CPU and GPU RIP technologies through a simple OPC UA configuration switch, providing a straightforward migration path to GPU-native production.

Version 6.0 also delivers substantial improvements to color management, automation and print quality. Enhanced Spot Color management, expanded color libraries, improved PrintFlat integration, broader 16-bit workflow support and significant OPC UA enhancements simplify deployment while giving OEMs greater control over color, calibration and factory integration. Operators will also benefit from faster startup, improved queue management, enhanced search capabilities and numerous workflow refinements throughout SmartDFE.

Perhaps most importantly, SmartDFE v6.0 establishes the direction of travel for the platform. The industry is moving towards heterogeneous computing architectures that combine CPUs, GPUs and AI processors to deliver ever higher levels of performance. Emerging hardware such as NVIDIA RTX Spark demonstrates this shift, combining powerful GPU computing with unified memory architectures that reduce data movement and enable a new generation of GPU-native applications.

SmartDFE is being developed with this future in mind. As the platform evolves, additional technologies will progressively move to GPU-native implementations, enabling higher throughput, lower latency and lower system costs while preserving the openness and flexibility that OEMs depend on. This is another important step towards our vision of SmartDFE as the platform for digital front end evolution.
