Unlocking next-gen document performance: what’s new in Mako 9.1.0

From high-volume commercial print workflows to enterprise document engineering, digital print pipelines demand two uncompromising traits: blistering rendering speed and improved output fidelity.

With the release of Mako 9.1.0, we are taking another major leap forward. This release expands our GPU-native Apex rendering pipeline, brings native PDF/X-4 export, hardens document resilience against real-world malformed files, and modernizes cross-platform developer toolchains.

Here is a closer look at the highlights shaping Mako 9.1.0:

1. Apex GPU rendering: faster, smarter, and multi-gamut ready

The Apex GPU-native rendering engine continues to evolve, giving developers unprecedented control over rendering pipelines and post-processing:

  • Post-processing shaders and sampled textures: Apex can now expose rendered frames as sampled textures for post-processing shaders that require access to neighboring pixels—enabling advanced spatial filtering, convolution, and inspection filters.
  • On-GPU color conversion: We’ve shifted color-space transformation, including RGB, CMYK, and ICC-profile-managed images, directly to the GPU, dramatically reducing CPU overhead and memory transfer bottlenecks.
  • Extended-gamut and spot color control: Apex now natively handles extended-gamut color spaces such as CMYKOV in post-processing. Furthermore, developers can render selective process components or bypass process plates entirely when only spot channels are needed.
  • Instant RGB previews: Generate rapid, accurate RGB screen previews directly from process, spot, or extended-gamut production streams.
  • Granular GPU selection: A new GPU selection API lets applications inspect and programmatically select which graphics device Apex utilizes, essential for multi-GPU workstations and cloud container instances.
  • macOS and Metal Parity via modern Vulkan SDK: Thanks to upstream improvements in MoltenVK 1.4.2, macOS developers can now build against Vulkan SDK 1.4.357.1 or later, unlocking stable, high-performance Metal acceleration on Apple silicon and Intel Macs.

2. Print-ready standards: direct PDF/X-4 and transform pipelines

Standards compliance is non-negotiable in prepress and production print. Mako 9.1.0 introduces crucial capabilities for standards-based delivery:

  • Direct PDF/X-4 output: Create compliant PDF/X-4 files natively, preserving live transparency and modern color management without unnecessary flattener artifacts.
  • Multi-threaded APO transforms: The Alternate Print Output (APO) architecture now supports executing custom transformation chains across dedicated worker threads, boosting throughput on dense multi-core servers.
  • Deep XObject inspection and editing: Developers gain enhanced programmatic control to inspect, modify, and restructure Form XObjects directly within the document tree.

3. Improved document resilience and leaner output

In real-world workflows, the files sent to your RIP or archive system aren’t always pristine. Mako 9.1.0 doubles down on error recovery and stream integrity:

  • Graceful malformed PDF recovery: Mako now seamlessly recovers from corrupt cross-reference tables, mismatched marked-content operators, invalid composite glyphs, non-standard XObject hierarchies, and malformed JPEG streams.
  • Optimized incremental saves: File bloat during iterative edits and annotations has been significantly reined in, keeping modified documents compact.
  • High-speed OCR layer processing: Generation and handling of searchable text layers over high-resolution scanned pages are now significantly faster.
  • PCL / PCL/XL engine refinements: Resolved text and line clipping, improved indexed color conversions, restored missing raster elements, and introduced pre-resolution font-request visibility for PCL5.
